The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a vital resource for pregnant and breastfeeding persons, as well as children up to 5 years of age. MFHS is the largest provider of WIC in Pennsylvania serving approximately 50,000 pregnant and nursing women and their children each month.

I am reaching out to express our deep concern regarding the budget impasse and federal funding shutdown. A prolonged federal government shutdown of more than one to two weeks puts babies and young children at risk. Families may lose access to infant formula, breastfeeding support, and other critical WIC services, which would lead to negative health outcomes for newborns and young children.

WIC has a proven track record of improving maternal and child health. For over 50 years, WIC has demonstrated its ability to adapt and thrive, even during periods of uncertainty. Its decades of bipartisan backing reflect a shared commitment across political lines to support families, reduce food insecurity, and promote healthier futures.

The shutdown threatens to undermine public health, with long-term impacts that will be difficult to reverse. In the strongest possible terms, we urge Congress and the Senate to come together on a bipartisan basis to avoid a situation in which programs like WIC cannot continue serving families. Families across the country deserve better than the uncertainty created by political gridlock. It’s time for Congress and the Senate to fulfill its most basic obligation – to fund the federal government and programs like WIC.
