Regional Maternal Health Coalition

We’re making a difference in maternal health in Pennsylvania.

The Northeast Regional Maternal Health Coalition (NRMHC) is an initiative of Maternal and Family Health Services (MFHS).

In September 2024, MFHS launched the Northeast Regional Maternal Health Coalition (RMHC), a collaborative initiative designed to improve maternal health outcomes across 14 counties in Eastern Pennsylvania. The RMHC brings together healthcare providers, community organizations, policymakers, and lived experience experts to advance equitable, high‑quality maternal care.

Coalition Goals

  • Reduce maternal mortality and morbidity using CDC and PA MMRC recommendations.
  • Advance equity across racial, socioeconomic, and geographic lines.
  • Strengthen maternal health infrastructure through trauma‑informed care and workforce development.
  • Advocate for key policy changes, including extended postpartum Medicaid coverage.
  • Expand access to prenatal, postpartum, behavioral health, and SUD services.

Coalition Membership

The Northeast RMHC currently has 105+ total members, including 40 lived experience experts whose firsthand insight shapes all recommendations.

Members are represented by maternal health professionals, hospital systems, insurance companies, educators, policymakers, and community leaders.

Priority Areas

RMHC’s work is driven by five Priority Teams focused on the most pressing regional needs, including:

  • Access to High‑Quality Care: Improving clinical protocols and patient education to prevent maternal mortality.

  • Social Determinants of Health: Addressing disparities, injustice, transportation challenges, and financial barriers.
  • Rural Maternity Care Deserts: Expanding access in underserved rural areas.
  • Expanding & Diversifying the Maternal Workforce: Building a culturally competent maternal health workforce.
