Regional Maternal Health Coalition

Join Us in Making a Difference in Maternal Health!

Thank you for your interest in the Northeast Regional Maternal Health Coalition, an initiative of Maternal and Family Health Services (MFHS)!

MFHS is developing a regional maternal health coalition (RMHC) in a 14-county service area, using the CDC’s State Strategies for Preventing Pregnancy-Related Deaths. MFHS is also using principles of community engagement to select, implement, and evaluate the 2024 Pennsylvania Maternal Mortality Review Committee recommendations for improving maternal health outcomes, promoting maternal health equality, and reducing health disparities.

This group of community members and professionals will represent diverse interests related to the promotion of maternal health and prevention of pregnancy-related deaths. Care providers will include professionals in maternal fetal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, midwifery and registered nurses, psychiatry and addiction medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, anesthesiology, community health, social work, violence prevention, health statistics, coroners and medical examiners, and government agencies.

Our Mission and Goals

Our mission is to improve maternal health outcomes, with a continuous focus on equality, by addressing maternal health issues at the local level through the creation and enhancement of regional coalitions. We aim to do this by:

  • Enhancing maternal health services.
  • Fostering collaboration among healthcare providers.
  • Empowering communities with knowledge and resources.

Please note: This form is an application to be considered for the commission. Completion of this form does not guarantee acceptance into the commission, as we are working to ensure that the individuals selected represent a wide variety of demographic and occupational characteristics.

Northeastern Regional Maternal Health Coalition Updates:

  • Regional Gap & Asset Analysis:
MFHS and The Institute have completed a comprehensive gap and asset analysis for the 14-county region, identifying key partners, mapping current initiatives, and highlighting areas of need and opportunity to advance maternal health equity.
  • Community Engagement & Data Collection:
Coalition-wide surveys have been distributed to capture both quantitative and qualitative insights from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including individuals with lived experience. The diverse perspectives gathered through these surveys are actively shaping coalition priorities and informing the development of targeted strategies moving forward.
  • Successful RMHC Kickoff Event:
The coalition hosted its inaugural in-person Kickoff Event, welcoming 89 attendees. The event included a keynote on maternal mortality in Pennsylvania, breakout sessions led by priority teams, and an interactive gap and asset identification activity facilitated by The Institute.
  • Priority Team Collaboration:
Each coalition priority team reviewed relevant sections of the 2025 MMRC report and completed a survey to identify the most impactful and feasible recommendations for implementation. These recommendations are being integrated into the coalition’s action plan.
  • Action Plan Development:
The coalition has completed a multi-sector action plan focused on understanding and implementing the most feasible recommendations regionally, investing in rural healthcare infrastructure, increasing access to behavioral health services, and supporting family-friendly and culturally competent care models.
  • MMRC Recommendations Under Review:
Our coalition’s priority teams have thoroughly reviewed the 2025 Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) report. Each team has begun identifying recommendations most relevant to their focus area, and coalition members have participated in a survey to indicate which recommendations they believe will be both impactful and feasible for implementation. These selected recommendations are now being integrated into our coalition’s strategic action plan to drive meaningful improvements in maternal health across Northeastern Pennsylvania.
  • Continuous Evaluation & Improvement:
Coalition activities are guided by SMARTIE objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebound, Inclusive, Equitable), with ongoing evaluation to ensure transparency, accountability, and measurable impact.
  • Workforce Development & Training:
Partnerships with institutions in the Northeast region are being pursued to launch maternal health workforce development initiatives, including trauma-informed care and cultural competency training for providers.
